What’s your AC doing?

Find the symptom closest to yours. These are the usual causes, though only a diagnosis on site confirms it.

  • Running but not cooling

    Usually caused by
A dirty filter or evaporator coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor, or a compressor that isn’t starting.
    What we do
Check airflow and refrigerant pressures, test the capacitor and compressor, and find any leak rather than just topping it off.
  • Ice on the lines or indoor coil

    Usually caused by
Restricted airflow from a dirty filter or coil, low refrigerant, or a failing indoor blower motor.
    What we do
Let it thaw, then find the cause: airflow, refrigerant charge or the blower.
  • Outdoor unit hums but won’t start

    Usually caused by
A failed start capacitor or contactor, a seized fan motor, or a compressor that’s struggling to start.
    What we do
Test the capacitor, contactor and motors, and replace the part that failed.
  • Water leaking inside

    Usually caused by
A clogged condensate drain line or pan, a failed condensate pump, or a frozen coil thawing.
    What we do
Clear and flush the drain, test the pump, and check the coil.
  • Won’t turn on at all

    Usually caused by
Thermostat settings or batteries, a tripped breaker or outdoor disconnect, a loose wire, or a drain safety switch.
    What we do
Trace power and control wiring from the thermostat to the outdoor unit and test the safety switches.

Repair or replace your air conditioner?

Most AC problems are one failed part, and a repair is the right call. These are the general rules of thumb we’ll walk you through.

How old is your air conditioner?Typical life: 12 to 15 years

Slide to its age to see which side fits

Usually repair if…

  • The system is under about 10 to 12 years old
  • It’s one part, like a capacitor, contactor, fan motor or drain
  • It has cooled the house well until now

Consider replacing if…

  • It’s 12 to 15 years old or more and needs a major repair
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer made, and has a leak
  • The compressor has failed on an older unit, or repairs keep coming

You’ll get both options and the numbers, and the choice is yours.

FAQ

AC repair questions

Browse all our FAQs

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The most common causes are a dirty filter or coil, low refrigerant from a leak, a failed capacitor, or an outdoor unit that is not running. Check that the thermostat is set to cool and the filter is clean. If it still is not cooling, call for a repair.

Why is there ice on my AC lines?

Ice usually means the indoor coil is getting too cold, most often from restricted airflow (a dirty filter or coil) or low refrigerant. Turn the AC off and let it thaw, and run the fan to speed it up. Then have it checked, because running it frozen can damage the compressor.
