What’s your furnace doing?

Find the symptom closest to yours. These are the usual causes, though only a diagnosis on site confirms it.

  • Won’t turn on

    Usually caused by
Thermostat setting or dead batteries, a tripped breaker or furnace switch, a failed igniter or pilot, or a safety limit switch that tripped.
    What we do
Check power, controls and the ignition sequence, test the safety switches, and find out why one tripped, not just reset it.
  • Blowing cold air

    Usually caused by
A dirty flame sensor shutting the burners off, a failed igniter, an overheating furnace from a clogged filter, or a gas supply issue.
    What we do
Watch a full cycle to see where it fails, then clean or replace the sensor, igniter or other failing part.
  • Turns on and off constantly

    Usually caused by
Overheating from a dirty filter or blocked vents, a faulty flame sensor, a poorly placed thermostat, or a furnace too big for the house.
    What we do
Check airflow and temperature rise, test the sensor and limit switch, and look at how the system is sized.
  • Banging, squealing or rattling

    Usually caused by
Delayed ignition (banging), worn blower motor bearings or belt (squealing), a failing inducer motor, or loose panels and ductwork.
    What we do
Pinpoint the noise, then repair or replace the motor, adjust the burners, or secure what’s loose.
  • Higher bills, uneven heat

    Usually caused by
A dirty filter or burners, duct leaks, worn parts working harder, or an aging furnace losing efficiency.
    What we do
Clean and test the system, check the ductwork, and tell you plainly whether repair or replacement makes more sense.

Repair or replace your furnace?

Most furnace problems are a single failed part, and a repair is the right call. These are the general rules of thumb we’ll walk you through.

How old is your furnace?Typical life: 15 to 20 years

Slide to its age to see which side fits

Usually repair if…

  • The furnace is under about 15 years old
  • It’s one failed part, like an igniter, flame sensor, motor or switch
  • It has otherwise run reliably and heats the house evenly

Consider replacing if…

  • It’s 15 to 20 years old or more and needs a major repair
  • The repair would cost a large share of a new furnace
  • It needs repairs every season, or the heat exchanger is cracked

You’ll get both options and the numbers, and the choice is yours.

FAQ

Furnace repair questions

Browse all our FAQs

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

The most common causes are a dirty flame sensor that shuts the burners off, a failed igniter, a clogged filter that makes the furnace overheat and shut down its burners, or a problem with the gas supply. Check that the thermostat is set to heat and the filter is clean. If it still blows cold, call for a repair.

Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?

Short-cycling usually means the furnace is overheating from a dirty filter or blocked vents, the flame sensor is faulty, or the thermostat is in a bad spot. A furnace that is too large for the house can also short-cycle.
