When to call right away
These are worth a call at any hour. If yours can safely wait until morning, we’ll tell you.
No heat in freezing weather
- Usually caused by
- A failed igniter, flame sensor, blower motor or control board, a tripped safety switch, or a fuel supply problem.
- What we do
- Find the failed part and fix it on the spot when we can. An unheated house in deep cold risks frozen pipes, so this one can’t wait.
No AC in a heat wave
- Usually caused by
- A failed capacitor or contactor, a tripped breaker, a frozen coil or a refrigerant leak.
- What we do
- Get it cooling again, first for homes with babies, older family members or anyone sensitive to heat.
A leaking water heater
- Usually caused by
- A failed relief valve, drain valve or fitting, or the tank itself rusting through.
- What we do
- Stop the leak. A valve or fitting gets repaired; a leaking tank needs replacing.
Burning smell from the vents
- Usually caused by
- An overheating blower motor or an electrical failure. (Dust burning off at the first heat of the season is normal and fades within an hour.)
- What we do
- Find the source, replace the failing motor or part, and make sure the system is safe to run.
Water pouring from the furnace or AC
- Usually caused by
- A clogged condensate drain, a failed condensate pump, or a frozen coil thawing.
- What we do
- Clear the drain, replace the pump, or find out why the coil froze.
Sound like yours? Tell us what it’s doing and we’ll find the real cause.
What to do while you wait
- No heat
- Check the thermostat is set to heat and the filter isn’t clogged. Close doors and blinds to hold heat, and open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so the pipes get warm air.
- No AC
- Check the breaker and the thermostat. If the lines or coil are iced over, turn cooling off and run the fan to thaw it. Close the blinds on the sunny side.
- A leaking water heater
- Turn off the cold-water valve at the top of the tank, then the gas valve or the breaker for an electric heater.
- A burning smell or smoke
- Turn the system off at the thermostat and at its power switch. If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911.
