We called them because our heat pump transformer blew out, and our heat stopped working altogether. They called me back right away, came out to our house the same day, diagnosed what the problem was, and then had a new transformer installed the next day.”

What’s your heat pump doing?
Some heat pump behavior looks like a problem but is normal. Here’s how to tell, and what usually causes the real ones.
Blowing cool air in heat mode
- Usually caused by
- Briefly, during a defrost cycle, that’s normal. If it lasts, it can be a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, or a thermostat set up wrong.
- What we do
- Check the defrost controls, reversing valve, refrigerant charge and thermostat settings.
Covered in ice
- Usually caused by
- Light frost in winter is normal and melts off in defrost. Solid ice points to a failed defrost control or sensor, low refrigerant, or a fan not running.
- What we do
- Test the defrost board and sensor, the outdoor fan and the refrigerant charge.
Runs all the time, house still cold
- Usually caused by
- Very cold weather beyond what the unit can keep up with, a failed backup heat strip, dirty coils or filter, or low refrigerant.
- What we do
- Check the backup heat, airflow and charge, and whether the system is sized for your home.
Won’t turn on
- Usually caused by
- A tripped breaker or disconnect, a failed transformer or control board, or a thermostat problem.
- What we do
- Trace power and controls from the thermostat to the outdoor unit and replace what failed.
Electric bills jumped this winter
- Usually caused by
- Backup heat strips running far more than they should, often from a defrost or thermostat problem, dirty coils, or low refrigerant.
- What we do
- Check when and why the backup heat comes on, then fix the part or setting that’s calling for it.

Repair or replace your heat pump?
Most heat pump problems are one failed part, and a repair is the right call. These are the general rules of thumb we’ll walk you through.
How old is your heat pump?Typical life: 10 to 15 years
Slide to its age to see which side fits
Usually repair if…
- It’s under about 10 years old
- It’s one part, like a capacitor, transformer, board or fan motor
- It has heated and cooled well until now
Consider replacing if…
- It’s 10 to 15 years old or more and needs a major repair
- The compressor has failed on an older unit
- Repairs keep coming, or bills keep climbing
You’ll get both options and the numbers, and the choice is yours.

FAQ
Heat pump repair questions
Browse all our FAQsWhy is my heat pump blowing cold air?
For a few minutes during a defrost cycle, that is normal. If it continues, the cause is often a reversing valve problem, low refrigerant, or a thermostat setting. Call for service if it keeps blowing cool air in heat mode.
Is it normal for my heat pump to have ice on it?
A light coat of frost in cold, damp weather is normal, and the defrost cycle melts it off every so often, sometimes with steam. A unit encased in solid ice is not normal. Turn it to emergency heat if your thermostat has it, and call for a repair.
What does “aux heat” or “emergency heat” on my thermostat mean?
Both use the backup heat, usually electric heat strips or a furnace. Aux heat comes on by itself in very cold weather or during defrost. Emergency heat is a setting you choose when the heat pump itself has failed. If aux heat runs constantly in mild weather, something needs fixing.
Do you repair heat pumps at night and on weekends?
Yes. We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call (717) 758-8664.
